It depends on the app you want to run, and some apps do run flawlessly via 
Wine.

My friend and coworker who was trying to install various apps on Linux with 
Wine was just testing to see what it would load.  You're right, someone 
needs to run an OS that fits their needs, but many folks (like me) want an 
OS without all the issues of Windows.  I know , I know, Windows does run 
well if someone knows how to keep it clean of garbage, but it goes further 
for me.  I enjoy using Linux and OSX for that matter because I love the 
powerful command-line.  Windows is VERY lacking when it comes to command 
line, and I wish they'd include a Bash-type shell with Vista.  If they, 
like Apple, built Windows on a Unix-style kernel the world would indeed be 
a much happier place :)
