I think you've got your system misconfigured.  For you Dos window(s), go into 
Properties --> Program --> Advanced.  Of the three possible options, check 
Suggest MS-DOS mode as necessary.  Make sure the other two are NOT checked.
Unless you're extremely short on RAM, you can multitask behind a Dos window 
to your heart's content.  With 8mb of RAM I commonly have FrontDoor (DOS), 
GoldEd (DOS), and an internet connection active, all at the same time. 
Incoming mail to the FD windows, whether in the foreground or the background, 
is tossed just as quickly as it was before Windows 95.
