| subject: | KTX V.34 modems |
BG> Just as long as it connects OK, I don't really give a toss what BG> Windows says about it. Still wish it was easier to install BG> non-standard modems though. Interestingly, I've installed two modems here in Win95, and one at a friend's place, all different, (Maestro 144M, Courier, Dynalink Fastcard+), and Win95 "detected" all of them as "Generic 28.8", (even the Maestro!). FF>> Notice also that Win95 doesn't parse the connection result. BG> Yeah, it's a pretty archaic system when you think about it. "Afterthought" was the word I was thinking of :-) FF>> so on, right down to CONNECT 300/NONE !! No wonder these .inf files FF>> are so large ... BG> True, the USR's file is around 64Kb. Any wonder Win95 uses so much BG> disk space. :-) Oh yeah, found what would have to be one of the dumbest bugs in Win95 a few weeks ago. I only mention it here as it is modem related :-) You know that in Modem Properties -> Advanced, you can get Win95 to record a log file, which records any TAPI application's use of the modem. Great idea, terrible implementation. Apart from the fact Win95 censors the actual phone numbers dialed in the log file, (making cost calculation undoable), the file actually has a size limit! Once this straight ASCII text file get's to 256Kb in size, that's it. Nothing more will be written to the file. You get no warnings, no nothing. Unreal! Even a three line QBasic program can write to a text file megabytes in size, yet Win95 falls over at 256Kb :-( What more can you say .... ?? Regards, Frank ...
