subject: How does Warp compare to Linux ?

G'Day Vaughan,

On 07/10/96, Vaughan Wickham said to all the following :

VW> Anyone here used both Warp & Linux ?

Yes. Haven't used Linux for osme time though.

VW> I'm curious to know how Linux compares to Warp in terms of

 VW> any good).

Linux has a GUI called Xfree86 (correct me if I am wrong) which is quite
nice in my opinion. I have to say that OS/2 is the better of the two in
terms of ease of use, installation, etc (and I'm not just saying that
because I work for IBM). I have a healthy respect for Linux. Its a great
OS for getting into the guts of a machine.

 VW> I'm thinking about putting together a DX/2-66 with 16MB & 200-400MB of
VW> hard disk to play around with Linux ... would this be an adequate
 VW> platform

I ran Linux quite comfortably on a DX2-66 with 8Mb of RAM. X was a tiny
bit slow, but certainly usable.

I strongly recommend you try Linux if you want to play around with an OS
that lets you get right into the heart of itself - you will learn plenty
about PC's from it. Knowledge that translates to other OS's quite easily.

I'd put it on my machine here, but they tell me that Linux has no PCI Token
Ring drivers yet :(

Regards,

       Jason Meaden.
