the smiley is the proper character... it may be your editor or it may be
something else... can you check the raw reply packet before uploading?
manually unzip it or whatever and look at the files with LIST.COM and see
what you see... there will be other binary stuff but you're only interested
in the one you type so make a special "locator" for yourself...
maybe something like this...

  testing CTRL-A character '^a'

/this/ editor that i'm using won't let me put them in but others that i have will...

we must also remember that this is one of the reasons why there are
limitations to the characters allowed to be used in fidonet ;-)
