Yep, IOwa motorcycle riders got a helmet law actually
repealed in IOwa way back when. I had friends working both
sides of that one when it came up. My dad said it was a sad day for the
people of IOwa when they repealed it. My old
man rode his Harleys and other bikes for years, and never
mounted one without his skid lid, and I wasn't allowed to
either back when I was doing a lot of playing off road with
small motorcycles as a kid.

Hard hats: depends on the industry. THe live performance
industry is a mixed bag. BElieve it or not, you can see
riggers up in the steel overhead at these large arenas etc.
who must be belted securely, but the folks wandering around
below don't have lids. Kathy and I with our remote truck
are an exception. IF you're working below riggers and other such folk and
you work for us you *will* put a hard hat on.
YOur hard hat goes on, and your cell phone is *off* until
you're on break. WE tell casual labor this.

europe is pretty consistent with the entertainment support
industry requirement to wear hard hats when appropriate. A
lot of the riggers in EUrope have found climbing helmets
that meet the safety regs standards over there, as the rock
climbing helmets have a chin strap, something your hard hat
doesn't, and don't have a visor which blocks you view from
the direction objects might fall on you. We've been just
discussing this very topic in the live production usenet
newsgroup over the last couple of days in fact.

Regards,
           Richard
