I don't have an explanation for why things work or don't work.
"Miracles" have happened. They have been well documented. But there
doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason for why one miracle happens and
another doesn't. And I don't believe for one minute that it is *just*
the presence, or *just* the absence, of faith; although faith may well
play a role in the outcome. My surgeon, when I had cancer, said that
they could give me stats on the probablity of my survival. They can do
that with anyone. They can say to one person, "85% of people in you
postion are alive 25 years later." They can say to another person, " 80%
of the people in your condition are dead in six months." What they can't
do is predict what will happen to *this* individual.
Even physicists have discovered that, too, with light particles. You
know what the light *wave* will do, but not what any individual particle
will do. You know the famous marble experiment that kids in grade
school do. There is this box in which you drop marbles down and the
marbles are routed into one of two compartments. You can predict with a
high degree of accuracy what will happen to a thousand marbles: how many
will fall into one compartment and how many will fall into another. But
you can't predict at all where any individual marble will go.
And maybe it doesn't matter. To me, life is not a problem to be solved,
anyway. Life is a mystery to be lived.
