++> From Frank Masingill to D. Martorana

DM>> It was a nice top off as I had seen the movie "Titanic" on the large
DM>> screen earlier in the day .....and it was one of the most powerful
edia
DM>> experiences I've ever had .......a closest to being there. I believe we

FM> This continued popularity of the Titanic story which has netted
FM> so many book and movie dollars is, I find, quite interesting.
FM> Hardly ever mentioned any longer is the fact which was foremost
FM> in the minds of people regarding the Titanic tragedy when I was a
FM> child - that sending an ocean liner on a voyage without sufficient
FM> lifeboats was a consciously foolish act of supreme hubris.
The lack of adequate lifeboats is covered within the film and before
the actual sinking as was the somewhat reluctance to fire the final
4 boilers when the speed was already stepping out. As for "hubris",
there was no shortage of it then ......and none now (sort of goes
with our species!).
FM> Probably more than any other incident it typifies the extent to which
FM> (I won't use the word ideology because some appear to resist its
FM> harmful effects) the popular mind had been brought to trust modernity.
Frank, you must have missed my posting where I accepted your
definition of "ideology".
FM> Has our naivete decreased? I don't really know. What has actually
FM> happened in this century SHOULD make a lasting impression on humanity
FM> but I think it would be to bold and unwarranted to assert that it has.
FM> Philosophers don't and SHOULDN'T have the power to guarantee some
FM> program to advance humanity other than favoring education and openness
FM> in general and even THAT is a tall order.
I believe it always was a tall order, but in our century of whole
population schooling, **some** bit more of knowing is "out there"
to side glance the "all about". We have had to digest more in the
last 90 years than was normally expected of the average bear. For
5000 or so "progress" years, generations could share some common
awareness pacing centuries. Now even in my own family there are
already 3 extreme stratifications just in the last 50 years, I, a
world different from my parents, my grandson beginning to live in
a computer environment almost growing alien to me. Moving now
toward 200 year+ lifetimes and "other epicals" the pace will even
pick up more to perhaps a vertical curve .
NOTE: My main point on the "Titanic" was the enormous leap
between the older versions, and the new, in sheer sensual
impact!
