The funny thing is that the price difference is not that much. Most of the
desktops I sell are going to businesses who are smart enough not to keep
important data on the desktop anyway, so I put small (by modern standards)
drives in them.

A Maxtor 80GB costs me around $40. WD is about $47, and Seagate is $57 or so.
These are 7200RPM SATA drives. The Maxtor's have a year warranty, and have been
dying in less than 2 years. The WDs and Seagates have 5 year warranties, and I
have has no issues yet. We switched in 2004, when the Maxtor issues started
springing up.

$7 per unit is a small price to pay for avoiding an onsite warranty call.
