That is what I wound up going with.  Based on the suggestion of another, I
got an IBM Thinkpad.  Apparently, it has a Winmodem in it, but Ubuntu
detected everything else, including the PCMCIA modem I had plugged in.
The laptop linux site, that someone else posted, also has a link to a driver
for the Winmodem, should one want or need it.
