Compared to Doom 2, it was an improvement.

You can skip Bioshock 2, wasn't even done by the original studio as I recall.
Infinite is... "Infiniately" (groan) better.

Another game you should look at (Guarantee you missed yet) is Spec Ops: The
Line. Came out in 2012, was easily my GOTY mainly for the story, dealt with
PTSDs and was a great story. Way underrated.

If more action is your cup of tea, Borderlands 2.
