Well, here's my experience so far with our school district's homestudy
program. The state insists on calling it homestudy because "homeschool"
sounds too much like an institution to them and we can't officially use it
because we aren't credentialed teachers. However, I'm sure all the parents
n
the program use it anyhow. ;)
The teachers running the program are very personable, easy-going and
supportive of homeschooling. We had our first parents meeting yesterday with
a good sized collection of kids running around in the room and outside on the
playground. We are supposed to attend at least two parent's meetings per
semester plus we go in for a conference every two weeks to let the teacher
read our weekly journals, and to share ideas on how to proceed, and get
materials, etc. We are allowed to get materials from the school the child
would otherwise be attending, and from the homestudy office. The teacher
lso
made a committment to try to get any other materials we might request, and
gave the example that one parent requested a book on learning Latin and he is
now searching for this through some used book sources that are available to
teachers.
We also have set up a /back to homeschool/ type get-together picnic at a
ocal
historic park "Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve" and will be having
regular park/playground socializing meetings.
The parents all seem very enthusiastic and committed (what else can one
xpect
from homeschool parents?) and it looks like it will be a wonderful
hoolyear.
Cimeron (my behavior problem child) misbehaved at the meeting... the only kid
misbehaving as is often the case. It is disheartening, however today she
returned to school at the special ed school she attends in Concord.. and it
s
such a relief to have some quiet time again!!! When she's not here, Aaron is
a very quiet and easy going kid.
Okay, back to homeschool for me. :)
