IIS5+ is an extensible web server. On Windows 2000 Professional it's
there for developers mainly although I guess you can run a Intranet off
it but quite honestly it's too complicated. There's much more user
friendly freeware both for ftp and http.

In later editions 'components' were called features [probably because it
was confusing. I mean Games are under components.] However IIS links
into COM+, DTC, Message queueing and stacks more Enterprise ####e. See
MMC > Component Services. Welcome to a world of pain.

I run IIS7 on my Windows 7 workstation with PHP installed in FAST CGI
mode. I use the FTP server as well to ftp images from FreeBSD running on
VMware workstation to my desktop. 

It's solid, but it's not a five minute job to set it up, although it
probably is for Dustin.
