You are not forced. You can use sed or m4 or something to patch source
header files before compiling ... ;-)

The last time I had my hands on SMAPI it was the most portable thing in the
Universe. Maybe things have changed during the last two years when I did
not supervise development, but tell me, what exactly were the portability
problems you fixed?
