Thanks to all for your ideas.  I'm thinking that the Azimuth bearing =
would be a pretty lightweight pair of rings with some roller bearings = and
a Teflon or fuzzy furniture glider damper between them. I think 4 = points
of contact, at the corners of the chairlegs' footprint, would be = a lot
more stable than 3.  Otherwise, it would be a  "centerless" dob =
base - flexible rocker along the lines of Greg Babcock's 24" or Mel's
= new 20", partly for the practice of building one, and partly to save
= weight.  The intent is to make it light enough to "just throw it
into = the car", along with a scope or two..., for a night out or a
star party.
