BK>Try 5 years. Whoops, thats for a licensed plumber. Which also
BK>takes 5 years. Joe the plumber filed for an apprenticship, but
BK>his employer went out of business, or so he announced recently.

You can qualify for a plumbing contracters license in California with four
years experience in the trade. The experience must be within the last ten
years.

And the average experience for those applying to take the test for a plumbing
contracter license in California is around eight to ten years.

TR> One of my nephews got his contracters license recently, and

TR> complete home remodeling, roofing, flooring (tile, ceramic,
TR> etc), counters and tubs.

BK>This ain't wherever you live. They actually have to be qualified
BK>here.

My nephew worked in the trade for which he has his own contracters license for
almost 15 years before applying for his license. And of course, no `unions'
were involved to make the process of obtaining his license more complicated
than it has to be, not to mention far more expensive due to the union wanting
`its' cut of the money.

The exams for plumbers are held in eight locations around the state, one of
which is San Diego.

JM>>Nothing requires the owner to be licensed.
JM>>At least in the States I am personally familiar with.

TR> Joe the plumber could probably have his own contracters
TR> license in less than eight to ten weeks. It isn't all that
TR> big a deal.

BK>It is in states where they expect you to be qualified.

Ah yes.....in states where the `unions' control who succeeds and who doesn't.

In any case.....the plumbing exams in California are a bit complicated, and
its unlikely someone unqualified, or who had little experience, would pass.

For someone with hands-on experience in the plumbing trade, and four or five
years continuous experience working for a company or a private contracter, the
test should be no trouble at all.

About two months after you appply to take the test, you are scheduled for the
testing. You can enroll in a prep program that helps prepare you for the test
while you are waiting for your testing date. Actually....the hardest part of
the test is in the law part of the trade (state and county building codes,
federal standards, etc).

About 4 to six weeks from the time you apply for the license, to the time you
test and get the license.

No big deal. No `unions' involved, either.
