That's a USR modem connect string.  For some reason, I thought you had a
Rockwell based modem.

Autobaud detect most certainly should be OFF.  Turning autobaud OFF is
usually called 'locking the port'.  *You want the port locked*.  With
the port unlocked, (autobaud ON) most likely your modem was talking at
one speed while your Comm program was listening at a different speed and
therefore didn't recognize the CONNECT string.
USR modems generally work well with the factory default harware
flow control profile (&F1).  Leave the Autobaud OFF and change the init
string to AT&F1.
