Ah... where I come from, talking animals are quite routine in jokes & in stories intended for children. What strikes me as amusing is the idea of a fish appropriating a person's lunch because seagulls do that around here & you might be well advised to keep your wits about you in certain public places. I also imagine humans who've fallen asleep during a boring lecture can relate to dogs or cats who fall asleep when they're safe, warm, and dry and don't expect anything which requires their immediate attention to happen for some time.
While this tale didn't strike me as particularly amusing at first, it seems to grow on me the more I think about it.... :-))
