Have you tried booting a LIVE CD, mounting the disk under /mnt (say) and 
manually affecting repairs?

	mount -t ext2 /dev/hda3 /mnt
	cp /vmlinuz /mnt
	perl -i.BAK -pe 's/^root:.*?:/root::/;' /mnt/etc/shadow
	umount /mnt

or something like that?
