I'm not surprised....after all...those effect loops can throw out far more
signal than most of the effect modules can handle....

Yeah...take a look at the specs of the effect send output jack of your
amp....signal level for instance...
Then take a look at the specs for the input jack of your effect gear...
Distortion on the input of a DSP can give you some mysterious and stunning
results....you might even end up with a blown up input-stage on your effect
module....
But then, this is just an educated guess....I really need some specs of the
effect loop of the amp and the in- and outputs of your effect-box to give you
more solid answers....
