Actually, the first on-screen appearance of a woman holding the center
seat was in The Enterprise Incident...the (female) Romulan Commander,
played by Joanne Linville. The episode wouldn't have worked, otherwise
(it just would have gotten the slash fiction started earlier ;-) ).
