subject: printing checks

I have an old version of Quicken (3.0 for DOS). It has served me well until
recently. I would like to be able to print checks without having to pay the
outrageous price charged for "Quicken compatible" checks. My version of
Quicken only supports 3 kinds of checks. Each has been made just a bit
different from the standard bank check that you can't get the print in the
right place.
Has anyone had success in 1) finding a version of Quicken that lets you set
up the check printing template to fit any size check?
or
2) tickling the insides of Quicken so that you can alter their templates?
