New toy, new toy, new toy!
We got a new computer today... a Toshiba Satellite whatever. All the trimmings...
Intel Pentium 4 2.40 Ghz, 15" TFT screen, 512 M memory (expandable to
1024 M), 60 G hard drive (hey, it's only a laptop), DVD-R/RW, nVidia
GeForce 32 M... and,
unfortunately, Windows XP Home Edition.
(In an aside, who is the moron at Microsoft that keeps naming things?
Remember their very short lived Windows "Millenium" edition?
Pretty bright naming an operating system after a known computer bug. So
what the heck is a "Home Edition"? Sounds like a game show...
"And for our lucky viewer, a 'Running Man' home game!")
All sorts of connectors on this puppy... standard parallel port for the
printer (though more and more those are going USB only), port for a
monitor, i.Link Ethernet port, FireWire, 3 - count 'em - 3 USB ports,
S-video (so you can hook up the computer to a compatible TV and watch
DVDs), 2 PC card slots, an 'A' card
slot (whatever the hell that is)... all sorts of toys.
Of course, being a straight-from-the-factory bundled computer (we bought it
at CompUSA, $1699 after $300 in mail-in rebates, plus a free printer (HP
DeskJet 3245... $79.57, free after $80 in rebates)) -- all sorts of
nonsense on there that we don't need, such as AoHell, MSN Exploder,
AT&T offers, Quicken 2003 New User, etc. I spent several hours
stripping all that nonsense off.
It's got a touchpad mouse, which is going to take some getting used to...
but we're going to pick up a USB mouse for it (no PS-2 ports for keyboard
or mouse, just the USB).
*Finally* I can play "Jedi Knight II"...
