One 2009 dollar has the same general purchasing power that 6.5 cents had in
1940, according to the consumer price index tables.  That would make a 1940
dime equal to roughly $1.50 today.  There are some places where you can
watch non-new releases for $1.50. or you can rent a DVD for about that much.

But the real test of whether it is a bargain is what you GET for that
price.  In 1940 a movie ticket would get you into a movie that was probably
made in 1939 -- considered the best year for movies.  Most people could
pick a dozen or more 1939 movies that compare well to ANYTHING that has
been made in the last year:
