On 04-30-97, BOB DAVIS said to MARK WRIGHT:
BD>I still don't get your point about postscript. Postscript is a printing
BD>language and has nothing to do with hardware. I can send postscript via
BD>lan, infrared port, dial-up modem, or serial port. Perhaps you're
BD>relating it to the fact that the postscript language sends a lot more
BD>information out the port to print a page, thus necessitating the use of
BD>the IRQ to control the data flow. But this has nothing to do with the
BD>postscript language itself. Sharing IRQ means that both devices will make
BD>use of the IRQ. If the printer port didn't use the IRQ, you wouldn't be
BD>sharing it, would you? Bob
Mark frequently has a bit of trouble explaining himself. I *believe* that he
means the PS printer itself (based on a comment in yesterday's packet), not
the language. In that case, once clarified, I'd tend to agree since the
irst
laser printers included PS ones. These are the class of printers that likely
started using the faster parallel port speeds, requiring the use of an IRQ.
At least that's how I'm now interpreting his comments...
