Subject: squirrels
BL> SP> We commonly call ground squirrels- chipmunks. They are smaller than
BL> SP> regular squirrels, with attractive stripes on face and body and when
BL> SP> in a hurry, their tails stand straight up . Sometimes that tail is
BL> SP> the only clue that we have to the small animals running away from us,
BL> SP> because we can't see them clearly.
BL>Not to be a smartie, Sandra, but ground squirrels and chipmunks are
BL>two different critters, and live in different environments...
And what is called a ground squirrel in one place doesn't even exist
in another. Anyway, Bob, you prodded me into looking it up, just to
make sure I wasn't passing on false information. (I hate getting it;
so I had better not give it! :-)) My RD North American Wildlife guide
under "Eastern Chipmunk" says (pg 55) -Chipmunks are ground-dwelling
squirrels.
There is also the Thirteen-lined Ground Squirrel , or Federation
Squirrel, but I don't recall seeing one. It is undoubtedly south of
Canada.
So, we're both right - even though the same name means different
things to us. :-)
...Sandra...
