Depends on what you define as a "serious" cyclist. Is that someone who might 
depend on a bike for basic transportation? Or is that someone who has all the 
latest Campy components? Millions of Chinese who ride their bikes EVERYWHERE 
are, IMHO, serious cyclists, and most of them ride 1-speed bikes! Your 
definition of "serious" is not necessarily everyone else's.
 Please don't take this a "flame". I'm just trying to point out the fact that 
not everyone is on the same level with respect to cycling, nor do they all do 
it for the same reasons.
