BG> Does anyone know of any sources that have information

Go to the library and go over back issues of WoodenBoat
magazine. This magazine has often had articles on building
such boats and on resources for building such boats.
I assume that you mentioned being a carpenter because you
intend to build a wooden boat. In any event, if your plans
include using epoxy as an adhesive, or fiberglass for sheathing,
I recommend System Three Resins (in Seattle, WA) as a source
for fiberglass and epoxy supplies. I don't have the number
right now, but they also advertise in WoodenBoat.
BG> I know it's probably the long way around getting into

If you want to boatbuild and enjoy building for its own sake,
build it. If you just want to get on the water, do whatever
else you enjoy doing for money and buy it. Alot of people
have quit in the middle of boatbuilding projects because
they didn't enjoy the building, and so they ended up alot of
money and time behind with no boat to show for it.
I have built a 15' skiff using plywood and fiberglass using
the drawings for a boat from Harold Payson's book, _Build
the New Instant Boats_, and I can vouch that the "tack and
tape" method of building can get you a very strong and
serviceable boat in a relatively short time (this took me
a summer of weekends to build). I have used it on relatively
protected ocean waters for set netting, it has carried alot
of heavy loads and taken alot of abuse, including regular
bouncing and dragging on rocks, but has only needed the
bottom paint touched up.
Take care,
Alex
