Boy is that ever true.  A couple of decades ago some 75 year old farmer down
in southern Nebraska hit the Lotto America jackpot for probably ten million
dollars (Lotto America morphed into what is now Powerball).  Anyhow this guy,
who'd inherited his farm from his parents and had lived there all his life except
for service in WW II, had to sell the place and move away because of all the
people who were making their way down to see him with their sob stories and
begging for money.
