ml> WINS?? WINS stands for WWIV Internet Network Support. Basically how WWIV networking transitioned from dialup network transfers to Internet (ie. BinkD). The major breakthru recently is that Frank Reid located the very latest WINS source code on SourceForge. I downloaded it and after making some changes to a few of the modules, got it to compile using Visual Studio 2005 and we are now up and running a native WWIV network again. The latest version allows SMTP on an alternate port - which is needed since most ISPs block port 25. ml> this is good news... i really hate to have seen so many of the pioneering ml> networking technologies fall and die... WWIV, RIME/PCRelay and others... ml> each with their own original methods and capabilities... ml> ml> FWIW: WWIV moderated message areas were the closest to usenet moderated ml> newsgroups in that each post to a moderated area was sent to the ml> moderator via private mail for approval and posting to the area or ml> rejection with or without a post to the sender for the rejection... in a ml> way, i wish that FTN had had proactive moderation instead of reactive ml> moderation... proactive would have completely prevented a lot of the crap ml> posting wars that FTN networks are known for... on the reverse side, i ml> don't know that i would want to have been a moderator for an active (eg: ml> 500+ messages per day) message area back in the day ;) Yes, WWIV still has that functionality today. It isn't sent in an email, however. In WWIV, you can set a message area to "Require Network Validation". All inbound posts come back to the host and have to be validated before they reach all the other systems. I like that functionality, too. Used to use it all the time when hosting areas years ago. - Mark --- WWIVToss v.1.50* Origin: http://www.weather-station.org * Bel Air, MD -USA (1:261/1304.0) SEEN-BY: 3/0 633/267 280 640/954 712/0 620 771 848 @PATH: 261/1304 1 266/512 140/1 261/38 712/848 633/267 |
