Shortwave is still used a lot. You'll still find International Broadcasters 
like BBC, Radio Nederland, Radio Australia, etc. Besides, many home-services 
can be heard. Take the tropical bands for instance (120, 90 and 60 
meterband). These are used by local, regional and national stations from 
Asia/Pacific, Africa and Latin America. In these days of more modern ways of 
communication, many broadcasters switch to satelites for at least a part of 
their services, but in less developed countries, stations still need 
shortwave to reach their audience.
You can also hear ships, planes and other utility stations on shortwave, but 
I don't know much about that.
