Hi Ho, John!
>JT> I have not seen the blueprints yet (I am an Independant Contractor for
>JT> WED- G better known as the Disney Imagineering Department... I consult
>JT> in regards to accessability of all attractions at all the Disney parks
>JT> around the world).
>JT> A funny story, related to my Disney work, but not related to the
>JT> Peoplemover... the MGM movie ride at the MGM studio themepark in
>JT> Florida had a slight problem. They built the ride before they
>JT> consulted with me (before I signed off on it)... one aisle was 27"
>JT> wide, and ended with three steps at the end, and the steps were in a
>JT> dark area ... and this was supposedly the
>JT> WHEELCHAIR ACCESSABLE aisle. First, all walkways should be lit...
>JT> second, minimum accessability is 36" preferably 40")... and third,
>JT> (wheelchairs do not go down stairs easily for
>JT> most people (wheelchair tennis and basketball players like myself dont
>JT> have a problem with it). Needless to say, I RED PENCILED the
>JT> blueprint, and they had to delay the opening of the ride and rip out
>JT> that entire section of the ride and build it correctly.
>JT> Such is life in the Magical World of Disney 8;)
Thank you for sharing your story. Since I am hearing impaired, I am more
aware of what companies and corporations do for the physically challenged. I
am generally impressed with the level of support Disneyworld provide for the
hearing impaired and for other physical conditions. As a member of DVC, I
was glad to find that they had a TDD number for us to use when making
reservations. When we arrive at our vacation home, we can request and receive
various assistive hearing equipment to make our stay more enjoyable. When my
family took my mother along, she had to use a wheelchair, and we all
appreciated very much the easy accessibility found most everywhere. It is due
to people like yourself, John, that makes WDW and other Disney Magical
places, through meticulous professionalism and dedication, THE magical place
for the physically challenged.
