Welcome to the Audio ECHO !!! It is good to see people signing
on from your part of the world !
Speaker cables is a hotly contested and argued subject in ever Audio
forum I have read. There are two basic schools of thought.
1. Any good quality wire, such as that we here in the USA call "Zip
Cord", the cord which we use to run between appliances and lamps and
electrical wall outlets, will give you just as good a sound as the very thick
very expensive and custom wound wires costing 10 or 20 times more.
2. The modern exotic and thick/large diameter cables make a noticable
difference in the sound.
I belonged to the first group for several years. I tested several
different cables and found no improvement over my plain wires. Then a couple
weeks ago I tried an expensive cable that has several oblong shaped strands
running its' length (Tara Labs RSC 1000) with a new insulation, and it made
a very noticable difference in the midrange and the treble. Especially in
vocals and string quartet music. But whether it was worth the price is a
matter to the individual. For me, I believe so as this is the type music I
most enjoy.
As explained to me, the least resistance offered by the wire, the
better your sound. The thickness or "guage/square millimeters" required
as well as the maximum resistance, depends on the length you wish to run
your speaker cables. The longer the run, the thicker the cable and the better
the insulation needs to be.
There is also some controversy about multi-stranded cable versus
solid core wiring. I believe the multistranded to be the best for several
reasons....mostly for its' increased surface area.
Tell us a little about your system. What brands are the most popular
there now. Where exactly in the old CCCP are you? We had a gentleman from the
suburban Moscow area a few months ago. He worked in a bank and used the bank
computer to access the Audio Echo. When he changed jobs he lost access to the
computer and we lost contact. Is a broad variety of music CDs easily
available in the stores there?
So welcome aboard ! You will find a very friendly and helpful group
of Audio nuts, novices like myself and several professionals, discussing
almost anything audio related.
Cheers, John
