The same as the ES register. Intel just decided to give 386+ CPU's a couple
of extra segment registers for no reason other than they felt like it. You
can use them yourself as you like - there is no "special" system use of them
(unlike CS, DS & SS). Most assemblets for 386 fully support FS & GS.
They're only available on 386+ CPU's though.
