Replying to a message of Sean Dennis to Bob Ackley:

SD> I have a friend who won about $5 million, after taxes, from the Texas
SD> Lottery. He immediately went and saw a "lottery wealth
manager" who
 SD> said this to him:

SD> - Tell the lottery that you do not want your winnings publicized. -
SD> Do not tell anyone that you've won the lottery. - Go about your
SD> business like nothing's changed. - Invest your money (friend got a
SD> lump sum) wisely and don't splurge immediately.

SD> Personally, I think the lottery is a tax on the stupid, but the advice
SD> seemed to work as my friend is still quite wealthy and quite sane.
SD> He does live in a nice (but not opulant) house, a good car and he
 SD> still works.

SD> He said he'll spend the money when he has time to really enjoy it.
SD> His kids have college funds (that he administers; when they get old
SD> enough to use it, he still has to approve all funds spent). I think
SD> it's more of the peace of mind that he has.

SD> I've read about many a person who's ruined themselves because of the
 SD> lottery.

I don't think anonymity is an option with Powerball. I've read of several winners
who went completely broke within several years. And while the money may not
change *you*, it *will* change the relationships you have with others.

An Omaha fireman won maybe five million (net) years ago and said he planned
to continue working. He couldn't do it because of the way his co-workers
behaved toward him. Five or six years later he was job hunting as he'd run through
the winnings.
