I have a friend who won about $5 million, after taxes, from the Texas Lottery. He immediately went and saw a "lottery wealth manager" who said this to him: - Tell the lottery that you do not want your winnings publicized. - Do not tell anyone that you've won the lottery. - Go about your business like nothing's changed. - Invest your money (friend got a lump sum) wisely and don't splurge immediately. Personally, I think the lottery is a tax on the stupid, but the advice seemed to work as my friend is still quite wealthy and quite sane. He does live in a nice (but not opulant) house, a good car and he still works. He said he'll spend the money when he has time to really enjoy it. His kids have college funds (that he administers; when they get old enough to use it, he still has to approve all funds spent). I think it's more of the peace of mind that he has. I've read about many a person who's ruined themselves because of the lottery.
