subject: MEX -- What is it?

Hi Peter,

 PK> Hi Linda,

BJ> If no switches are specified, then SILT defaults
LH> to generating everything except the Max 2.x-compatible area files.

LH> This is an example of exactly why I don't like most
LH> upgrades. Too much gets changed, not always for the
LH> better. This is one time, I guess I will HAVE to
LH> upgrade, like it or not. Why do programmers not listen
 LH> to their users?

PK> I think you misunderstand. Scott certainly DID listen
PK> to his followers, he provided a new version with a lot
PK> of extra features and capabilites that those people
PK> using it wanted, BUT he also provided EVERYTHING you
PK> need to run Max 3 exactly as if it was MAX 2! If you
PK> want to use MAX 3 as a MAX 2 system, then you need to
PK> change almost NOTHING, the upgrade is totally
 PK> transparent to the users!

PK> The SILT switches -2a -2u or -2s are all optional,
PK> unless you have an explicit need for SILT to produce
PK> the Max 2 control files (IE other specific S/W you run
PK> can't read the Max 3 files), the Max 3 files will be
PK> produced. Surely that can't be too difficult?

PK> With Max 3 you gain by using improved code that WILL continue to be
PK> supported through the Y2K issue, and you just may find
PK> a Max 3 feature that provides better service than the
PK> previous version. Its been a few years since Max 3 was
PK> released but I can't ever remember anything that was
PK> taken away or FORCED you to change after the MAX 2 to
PK> Max 3 upgrade was performed, a Max 3 install performs
PK> an automatic upgrade of S/W and allows you to keep your
PK> existing configuration without any change. I would say
PK> that 90% of your users will not notice a thing!

PK> Take a backup of your system and try it, I am sure it
 PK> will be a fairly painless affair.......pk.

Thanks. If I can find the files, I will read the docs and then see
what I can do. Since little glitches seem to crop up that can be annoying,
I think an upgrade might be called for.

    TTYL
        Linda
