subject: lengthy `find` strings?

It is beginning to seem to me that Word is stumbling on
this rather lengthy search or replace string.
Has anyone else had problems locating or substituting long
characters strings?
Word 6.0 frequently crashes on me during a macro which loops down
a two-column 60-row table, collecting "find" and "replace" text
for a series of global replacements in a document.
Here is a sample cell from column 1:
               Manufacturer^wand^wlot^wno.^wœ^w^#
Here is a sample cell from column 2:
               Manufacturer's Name and Lot No. £ 7
The idea is to standardize all forms of text to a common text,
that of the right-hand column.
There are variations on a theme in this area, "manufacturer's
name" and "manufacturer name" and so on. maybe ten rows of
similar text in all amongst the 60 or so rows in the table.
