I was asked to define the zernikes in plop. I took the definition off some
document I found who knows where on the web, but with a citation to Applied
Optics, May 1980. I'll post the document as soon as I figure out how to get
through our new firewall!

In the mean time, here are a few of them:

Z1 = 1
Z2 = 2 * R * cos(theta)
Z3 = 2 * R * sin(theta)
Z4 = sqrt(3) * (2 * R * R - 1)
Z5 = sqrt(6) * R * R * cos(2 * theta) Z6 = sqrt(6) * R * R * sin(2 * theta)

In other words:

Z1: piston
Z2, Z3: tip and tilt
Z4: defocus
Z5,Z6: astigmatism.
