G'morning James,

JB> You round up the fillies... Er, Sheilas, and I'll pour the drinks!

MM> `Sheilas' ? My very good Sir, dost speak Strine or Noo Zland ?
MM> Fosters or Steinlager ? Reveal your knowledge of the South
MM> Pacific and I'll get you your very own savaloy...

JB> Ahh... It's South of the North Pacific.

Cower not, little Neddie, all are welcome Down Under...

 JB> Could I
JB> still qualify for one of them "Savaloy" thingies, or do I
JB> need more than one? ...Or should I be careful of what I
 JB> wish for? [-|

Heh-heh... Part of the argot of Australasians (Kiwis and Ockers
both) is the concept of equality in everything, expressed as..

"A fair suck of the sav"

... evocative of grubby small children on a beach or bush picnic -
with a few precious boiled-up savaloy sausages, dipped in tomato
sauce and shared with complete disregard for personal hygiene....

JB> BTW, in Canada, we pronounce our "Z" as "zed", so that'd
 JB> make you a "Noo Zedlan'r"?

`Zealand' is a spelling corruption of the Dutch `Zeeland', and the
pronounciation survived - even though "Z" is "Zed" here, too...

Visitors talk of `Noo Zeelanders', but both Ockers and the locals
term them `Kiwis' - after the small, flightless and near-blind
indigeneous bird that survived most of the dinosaurs (we've still
got one surviving in our bush called the tuatara) but probably not
the humans that arrived a few hundred years ago.

  Fosters, I've never...
JB> Steinlager, sounds interesting! The stoutest I like is an
JB> occasional Guiness. Can't say I've tried it warm though.

Fosters is a dinky-di Ocker beer, world-famous in Australia as the
fluid that courses in the veins of any real Aussie; Steinlager
(or perhaps Lion Red - I'm not a beer drinker) is about the
equivalent in NZ; both are served at Antarctic temperatures,
just like most other liquid refreshments.

Guiness (there's some in the frig here) has a local reputation and
following - particularly around the 17th of March when the place
goes green for a day.

And `sheilas' used to be the universal background accessory for
all Australasian blokes - but here in NZ now run the place
(Governor-General, Prime Minister, Chief Justice ... right up to
such worthies as truck drivers, construction and road workers).

However, undoubtedly the best thing about NZ is the unlimited
supply of local champayne ... the unfettered export drive to get
the world happy on NZ wines has excellent methodes in local
supermarkets at less than $NZ10 a bottle ...

:-))))
