Rather than use an obsolete, and near impossible to repair piece of
equipement like a 3 speed hub, I have a different solution. Go with 2 speeds
instead. You could use a standard double chainring crank with a front
deraileur and an old 5 speed hub. Instead of mounting a rear deraileur you
would only need a simple spring loaded lever with a single jockey wheel (to
retain chain tension). You would have in effect a 2speed bike (low and high
gears) with a very simple gear system with the added advantage of being able
to move the chain to a different rear cog (albeit mannualy) when conditions
dictate.
