Pro-Family Groups Oppose Satcher Nomination
By Martha Kleder, staff writer
Pro-family leaders are calling for President Clinton to withdraw the
nomination of Dr. David Satcher as the next U.S. Surgeon General. Randy
Tate of the Christian Coalition says, "He opposes parental consent prior to
a child receiving access to federally funded family planning services,
including condoms, birth control and abortion referrals. He wants to cut
parents out of the loop."
"He is [also] going around the country citing studies that say it would be
a great idea to have taxpayer-funded free needles for addicts," adds Gary
Bauer.
Bauer, president of the Family Research Council, is also troubled by
experiments Dr. Satcher reportedly supervised involving pregnant women with
AIDS. "It is unconscionable that the president of the United States would
be pushing a nominee for Surgeon General who has authorized experiments on
women and children of color in Asia and Africa," Bauer says.
Meanwhile, Senator John Ashcroft is holding firm in his opposition. "After
a thorough review of his past statements and views, I believe the Senate
will conclude that America deserves better than Dr. David Satcher for
Surgeon General of the United States."
Sen. Ashcroft has put a hold on the nomination to assure that the Senate
has a full public debate on the issue.
