Even cargo cults are based on actual delivery of some cargoes. If you just
remove all miracles and supernatural allusions, there remains a person who
was poor and powerless but lived a good life and said a lot of wise things.

It's highly unlikely for myth makers to make their hero so pitiful and die
such a horrible death unless they are talking about what actually happened.
