You "need" the vowels... The word has the sound of 'e',
which suggests that the letter 'e' is present with either
an adjacent vowel, or an 'e' at the end of the word, no?
This might lead to a child thinking the word was spelled
"here", but without the vowels, the word would not sound
the same.

Absolutely; english is an extremely difficult/maddening
language to learn; so many exceptions......

they are more along the line of practicing something already
