| subject: | Max for Linux? |
Hakan Koseoglu wrote in a message to Alex Vasauskas: HK> I think unfortunately there won't be Maximus/Linux. Considering the declining interest in bbses, I am afraid that you are right. HK> In Ankara, number of running BBSs are dropping all the time, HK> Maximus or not. Most of the survivers are Maximus running boards HK> but they are all desperate and can't compete with Internet. I see it too. In fact, I think that I have the only open bbs, at least one connected to Fidonet, in Alaska. There is only one regular user, and one or two other drop in occasionally. But, since I have the extra phone line for my fidonet and internet connections, I keep the bbs open FWIW. It seems to me, but apparently to no one else, that an electronic bulletin board where local people can talk to each other about local things is very desirable notwithstanding the internet. HK> Sysops HK> here are in a black mood, no-one wants its system usage around HK> 20-30 users. Your sysops sound like a pessimistic lot ;-) That many users here would call for celebration. HK> Only Die-Hard's are still struggling. I myself gave up HK> and closed my board two years ago. :( It was one of the hard and HK> sad choices I've ever made. I am co-sysoping the biggest BBS in HK> Turkey now but I really starting to wonder if it does worth or not. Whether it is "worth it" depends on why you do it. For me, I like fidonet echos much better than the internet newsgroups I have read. So long as I have this openly available to others maybe some will discover this too. I look at it as maintaining an open option for others locally to visit and share my interests. I also appreciate how the Maximus software has enabled me to do so. What do you see as the difference between running a bbs as opposed to replacing it with a web page? Maybe there is a way to use the internet to revive bbses? ---* Origin: 61 deg. 25' N / 149 deg. 40' W (1:17/75) SEEN-BY: 396/1 632/0 371 633/260 267 270 284 371 634/397 635/506 725 728 SEEN-BY: 639/252 670/218 @PATH: 17/75 138/146 270/101 396/1 633/260 635/506 728 633/267 |
