TONY Blair yesterday controversially blamed Britain's army of teenage single
mums for the shocking rise in crime.

The PM warned that lone parents in inner cities are unable to provide a
stable home life.

He implied their children grow up without discipline. and he urged girls not
to ruin their lives by falling pregnant.

Mr Blair agreed that the breakdown of the traditional family was connected
to rising crime.

He said at a meeting with church leaders in London: "Some young girls and
women who start families very, very young, often not in a stable setting,
are piling up problems for the future.

"It's important they get role models in the community so they can see it isn
't really a great life."

"They would be better to get a better life for themselves."

Critics say Labour's welfare system has led to an anti-family culture, and
left Britain with Europe's highest number of single mums.

Mr Blair's remarks were also challenged by YWCA chief Gill Tishler, who is
running a campaign to fight prejudice against young mums.

She said: "It's time to stop demonising them. Instead, let's give them a bit
of respect and trust them to be good parents."
