      SWORD MAN SHOT BY POLICE

The family of a sword-wielding man shot dead by police on a busy road has
described him as a compassionate charity worker.
Police say Simon Murden was shot after he approached officers with a sword
on the A63 west of Welton, near Hull, on Tuesday morning.


The 26-year-old's family has issued a statement expressing their devastation
at his death.

"He was a young man brought up in a committed Christian family and was
exploring the Christian faith himself," it said.

"He was a compassionate young man who cared about others, particularly those
from poorer countries and backgrounds.

"He loved life and wanted to make it a better place. He will be sadly missed
by family and friends.

"The family is not aware of all the details surrounding Simon's death and so
cannot and will not answer any questions."

Armed police were called at 6.20am following reports a van was being driven
down the eastbound carriageway in the wrong direction.

Humberside Police said baton rounds were fired when Mr Murden got out of the
van and walked towards the officers wielding the sword.

He was hit but got up and continued to approach the officers and it was then
that he was shot again, fatally.
