Clint:
I noticed on your address that you live in the immediate area of
where one of my dead ends lived. Maybe you could help me out of some of
the history of the area around the 1770's to the 1790's.
I'll give you my file on him and then ask you some questions
about the area.
                               The Baker KING File
Sep 1778 Wilkes Co. N.C., Baker King sold 400 acres on waters of South
Fork of New River including his improvements to Thomas CORVIN.
(Thomas Corvin marked out ...Daniel Yarnel written in) Land
          Entry book, 1778-1781.
Nov 1778 Wilkes Co. N.C.,Baker King and Benjamin Wilson summoned to Pleas
and Quarter Sessions Court as witness for Plaintiff Elijah Issacs
          against Hugh Montgomery.
Dec 1778 Wilkes Co. N.C., Baker King, a planter, along with John Laws,
Spencer Humphreys and Rubin Smithers, was sued by Joshua Scurlock
for cutting down an oak tree that contained bees and honey on Oct
1, 1778. State of NC, Wilkes Co., file C.R. 104.325, Wilkes Co.
          Civil Action papers, NC Archives.
1782 Henry Co. Va., paid 1 poll tax, owned no slaves.
1784 Wilkes Co. N.C., on tax payer rolls with 1 poll and 100 acres.
1785 Wilkes Co. N.C., on tax payer rolls with 1 poll and 50 acres.
Jul 1787 Wilkes Co. N.C., Baker King sues John Witherspoon. Jury members
listed. Jury finds Deft. guilty of Trover to a certain Bay mare...
parties agreed value said mare assertained by Bj. Dugger and Golson
Stepp. Wilkes Co. Court minutes, 1778-1788.
1787 Washington Co., N.C.(actually the whole state of Tenn. before it
became a state) tax list. Baker KING has 100 acres and 1 poll.
    1790 Wilkes Co.,Morgan Dist.,8th Co., N.C., census, pg. 122; M>16=1,
          M<16=1, F=3.
    1790 Burke Co.,Morgan Dist.,5th Co., N.C. census, pg. 108; M>16=1,
M<16=2,F=2.Note: Are there really two Baker KING's . Are they
          related?
    1793 Wilkes Co.,12th Military District, Watauger Settlement,near
presentday Boone, Watuage Co. N.C. Baker King has 200 acres and
          1 poll on taxables list.
Dec 1793 Wilkes Co., N.C. Baker King enters 100 ac. of land on Brushey fork
of Cove Creek; "border: my upper line and runs up both sides of
said creek; includes my mill and improvement". (Apparently this
means this land abutted land he already owned.
1794 Wilkes Co.,12th Military District, now listed as Capt. Dyers
district, Baker King has 200 acres and 1 poll on taxables list.
May 1795 Wilkes Co., N.C. Baker King and 16 others ordered to view whether
lands entered by (blank) Cunningham is fit for cultivation or not.
          Wilkes County Court minutes.
May 1795 Wilkes Co.,N.C. Baker King and two others are appointed as Patroler
          in Capt Dyers district.
1795 Wilkes Co, 12th Military Dist, Capt. Dyers district, Baker King has
200 acres and 1 poll on taxables list.
1796 Wilkes Co, 12th Military Dist. Capt Whittenton's dist., Baker King
has 200 acres and 2 polls on tax list. (This implies that a son has
come of age, now 2 polls.)
The above includes all I have on him during that time. It's
possible that there might be two Baker KING's in there, but I'm not
sure. Since you live in that area, maybe you can help me on a few
points. In 1793, he owned land in the Watauger settlement apparently on
Brushey fork of Cove Creek. Earlier, in 1787, he owned land in
Washington Co., N.C. As I understand it, Washington Co. included all of
the future state of Tn. However, did it also contain any land that is
now in N.C., possibly in Wilkes Co.?
Earlier, in 1778, he sold land on the S. Fork of the New
River. On my map, the New River seems to go as far east as the town of
Boone, N.C., however, I am not familiar with the country so I cannot
tell if it is close enough to Cove Creek to be the same place, just
described differently, or a completely different area.
I recently made a trip to the LDS library in Salt Lake and
pretty well exhausted their resources on Baker KING. However, I may be
making a trip to the East Coast next year and would like to do more
research there. Could you suggest where I might most profitably spend my
time?
Let me know if I can do anything for you out here in Ca.
Gerald in Fresno, Ca. (105 in the shade today...but it's a dry heat ;-))
