Honestly, anything should work for what you need above. Just try out some
LiveCDs of some of the popular distros that should work the best with CentOS
(Fedora, Ubuntu or even CentOS itself) before you decide on a permanent
solution.

I've used Thunderbird for email and NNTP for quite some time now. Haven't
really had a reason to look at any others as I've been happy with it. Chrome
and Skype will install on anything, and I have no idea what Slack is but if
it's a fairly popular program it'll most likely work on anything as well.

Also, most of the popular distros that have LiveCDs come with a choice of what
desktop or window manager you'd like to login to and/or install.
