Let me rephrase: Common use.  And, really, that's not totally true anyway - 
new formations replace old, [For instance, the proper formation
"furiosity" is 
fading with people using "furiousness"] etc.  I mean, English
used to have a 
*case* system....

Language evolves.  That's why some people have problems with Shakespeare, I 
imagine.  Besides, we loot the lexicons of other languages more than our own. :)
